A blaze at an RAF station is still burning three weeks on, the local fire service has said.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was first called to Desborough Airfield, Kettering, at about 20:30 GMT on 20 March.

Crews from the service have been attending the site daily to ensure the blaze is contained.

"Due to the roof of the hangar collapsing, the fire that remains cannot be accessed and put out by crews safely ," a spokesperson said.

At its height, six crews from Corby and Guilsborough attended the scene, using water jets and an aerial pump to tackle the flames.

Police put a cordon in place and the electricity supply to the building was isolated.

A spokesperson said the fire service "has attended the site every day" to "ensure the fire is contained within the hangar" to prevent it spreading.

"We continue to work with the site owners to see what actions can be taken to improve access to the remaining hotspots- at which point we would be able to extinguish the fire," they added.

The force added an investigation into the cause would be carried out when it was safe.
