A man has been treated in hospital after being shot by a police officer who was responding to an incident in Bristol.

Avon and Somerset Police were called at about 15:45 BST to Merlin Park in Portishead, following reports that a man had a firearm.

Armed officers were deployed to the scene and negotiators attempted to engage with a man inside a property. Sometime later, a police firearm was discharged.

The man was taken to hospital to receive treatment for an injury to his hand, which was not believed to be life-threatening.

No officers were injured in the incident.

A cordon remains in place while inquiries are ongoing, but police said they do not believe there is any wider risk to the public.
