"The Catholic community across south Wales and Herefordshire assure him of our prayer, love and fidelity.

"With his global experience and deep faith, I know he will be lovingly received, not only by Catholics, but by fellow Christians, people of all faiths and all men and women of goodwill.

"He will make an outstanding contribution to peace and stability in our world.

"Long live the Pope."

Bishop of Wrexham Peter Brignall said he "rejoices" with the whole church at the election of the newly elected Pope Leo XIV.

"He is to be assured of the prayers and fidelity of the Church of Wrexham; may he be blessed and inspired with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and know good health and peace throughout his papacy."

The Welsh Conservative leader in the Senedd, Darren Millar, also congratulated Pope Leo.

He said on X: "May God grant you wisdom as you take on your new responsibilities, and great joy as you proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord to the nations."

Plaid Cymru leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth said it was "both a significant and joyous occasion for Catholics worldwide".

"As many look to his papacy for hope in challenging times, may he lead with courage and compassion," He added.

Rev Andrew John, the Anglican Archbishop of Wales, sent his "most heartfelt congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election".

"In a world beset by uncertainty, the truths of the Christian message have never been more relevant," he said.
