Driver convicted of killing man after hit-and-run

A man who mounted the pavement in a stolen car and killed a pedestrian has been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.
Darren Whitehouse, 43, was stood talking to a friend on St Marks Road, Tipton, when he was hit in February 2021, police said.
Carlton Betts, 28, who had previously denied the charge, was found guilty in his absence on 15 April after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Betts failed to attend the trial but was arrested after a warrant was issued. He has been remanded in custody to be sentenced at the same court on 2 June.
Betts drove off, leaving Mr Whitehouse "lying in the road", said West Midlands Police, before dumping the vehicle in nearby Griffiths Street.
"Darren's friend fortunately suffered minor physical injuries, but was left devastated and traumatised by the incident," a force spokesperson said.
Betts, of Douglas Avenue, Oldbury, still tried to avoid facing up to what he did, "instead putting the family through more pain", said Det Sgt Paul Hughes from the force's serious collision Investigation unit.

"This verdict won't bring Darren back, but it will help his family some way to moving forward," the officer added.
"They have constantly fought for justice for Darren and have patiently waited for this verdict and I thank them for that patience and belief in my team."
