A pedestrian who was hit by a car on a motorway as he attempted to recover ladders from the road has died, police said.

The 67-year-old man was hit by a Toyota RAV4 on the northbound M1 close to junction 47 near Leeds, at about 13:30 BST on 21 May.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died on Tuesday, West Yorkshire Police said.

The force has appealed for anyone who saw the ladders fall from the roof of a Ford Ranger, or anyone with video footage of the incident, to come forward.

A police spokesperson said a man who was interviewed voluntarily by officers on the same day as the incident had been released under investigation.
