A woman has been racially abused and physically assaulted on a bus in south Belfast.

It took place on board a vehicle in University Avenue at about 20:00 BST on Sunday.

A female passenger was subjected to verbal and physical attacks by a man and a woman as the bus made its way from the Ormeau Road into the city centre.

Three male passengers then attempted to intervene, and one sustained a cut to his lip after a woman threw a bottle when she and the man were ordered to leave.

Police have said they are treating the incidents as both racially motivated and homophobic-motivated hate crimes.

They are asking those who may have been on board the bus as it travelled from the Ormeau Road, University Avenue, Botanic Avenue, Great Victoria Street, Bruce Street and Bedford Street to contact them.
