A man has died after a lorry ploughed through a motorway's central reservation barrier and hit four vehicles, police have said.

The collision happened on the M60 between Junction 16 at Pendlebury and Junction 15 at the M61 Swinton Interchange at about 19:20 GMT on Thursday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

The lorry, with a white cab and blue trailer, is believed to have struck two vehicles, crossed into the opposing carriageway and then collided with a further two vehicles, the force added.

The driver of one of the vehicles the lorry struck, a man aged in his 60s, died and a woman in her 20s suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries while several others sustained minor injuries.

GMP said no arrests had been made.

The force appealed for witnesses to come forward or anyone who has relevant dashcam footage from around the time of the crash.

The incident resulted in the overnight closure of the M60 in both directions between Junction 16 at Pendlebury and Junction 15 at the M61 Swinton Interchange.

The carriageway has now reopened in both directions.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said five people had been assessed by the North West Ambulance Service at the scene with two people taken to hospital.
