Two men died in a crash that closed a motorway for nearly 20 hours.

Police said they were called at 22:40 GMT on Monday to the M40 between junction 9 for Bicester and junction 8A for Wheatley.

The men died at the scene and two other men were taken to hospital with serious injuries, Thames Valley Police said.

The stretch of motorway, which passes through both Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, was closed for most of Tuesday and reopened at about 18:10, National Highways said.

The highways authority said Thames Valley Police carried out collision investigation work.

Diversions around Oxford were in place and heavy traffic built up on the A34, A40 and A4142.

The A34 near Abingdon was also shut on Monday night while police investigated a "sudden death".
