M25 bridge demolition 'progressing well'

Work to demolish a bridge over the M25 in Surrey is "progressing well", National Highways has said.

A full closure of the motorway between junction 10, near Wisley, and junction 11, for Woking, saw both carriageways shut over the weekend from 21:00 GMT on Friday.

The section of motorway is due to reopen at 06:00 on Monday.

The work is part of a £317m project to add extra lanes to improve safety and cut congestion where the motorway meets the A3.

Diversion routes have been put in place around the closure, although National Highways said on Saturday there were delays of up to 30 minutes on the approach to both junctions.

Work began in 2022 and was due to end this summer but the completion date has now been delayed until spring 2026, due to "periods of extreme weather".

However, National Highways said this would be the final full weekend closure of the motorway.

National Highways admitted previously there had been a "notable increase" in traffic during the last closure compared with three closures in 2024.

It encouraged drivers to allow extra time and use alternative routes where possible.

Drivers were warned to follow official diversion routes after an HGV driver had to be rescued by Surrey Police from Pyrford Lock after following Google Maps instead.
