Liverpool has had Purple Flag status for the last 15 years due to its safe nightlife

A night-time economy boss said he wants to expand Liverpool's status as one of the UK's safest places for a night out to include the rest of the city region.

The city centre has held Purple Flag status for the past 15 years, an accreditation similar to the Blue Flag scheme for beaches.

It recognises the work of authorities in Liverpool to create safe and thriving places for people visiting pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants after dark.

John Hughes, chief executive of Liverpool Nightlife CiC, said he now wants to see Purple Flag status cover the rest of the city region.

The scheme, run by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), assesses crime rates, hygiene standards, the range of visitor attractions as well as medical facilities and policing.

It also recognises initiatives on drink spiking as well as the Ask for Angela safety scheme.

St Helens also currently has the status.

'Keep everyone safe'

Mr Hughes said he will meet with Liverpool city mayor Steve Rotheram and the city council leader to discuss a bid for the award for other parts of the city region.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: "We have been in the scheme for 15 years and it highlights everything we do.

"We are one of the safest cities out there. We want to get ahead of the game."

He added: "We have a lot of young people out there and it is important we work on things like transport.

"If we can get it out to the four regions, then we would be the first city region in the world to get it.

"I have to have the conversation but why wouldn't we want the status.

"Keeping everyone safe is big in our industry and for people to invest in our great city."
