A care home is calling for birthday cards to celebrate the remarkable milestone of an "absolute treasure".

Maisie Dalziel, who turns 100 on 5 June, told staff at Fleming Court Care Home in Jesmond, Newcastle, she would like some "nicely written cards" to mark the day.

Members of the public are being invited to send her warm wishes, kind words or even a cheeky joke.

Care home manager Karen Stewart said: "We'd be so grateful if people could help us make this birthday unforgettable for her."

Born in County Durham, the centenarian-to-be moved to Newcastle during the war when her father secured work at the Vickers factory.

She became a nurse, and devoted her life to helping others in times of need.

However, she was also known for her glamorous style and love of ballroom dancing.

Karen Stewart said: "Maisie is an absolute treasure – her warmth, wit and wonderful stories brighten every day.

"Reaching 100 is an extraordinary achievement, and we want to make sure she feels as special as she truly is.

"Whether it's a card, a kind message or a little surprise, every gesture will mean the world to Maisie – and to all of us who love her dearly."
