A city centre shopping centre has closed suddenly, but shops and business owners have not yet been told why.

Stores, pubs and restaurants at The Square shopping centre in Birmingham closed on Tuesday evening, according to reports.

The Grey Lantern pub said on social media it was shut until further notice due to essential works taking place within the shopping centre. A staff member later told the BBC they had not been told anything else about the reason for the closure.

The BBC has contacted the centre, which has more than 30 businesses including a large B&M store, for comment.
