A detective has praised the bravery of a child victim of sex abuse after a "predator" was jailed.

Ashfaq Khan, 26, of The Oaks, Luton, is starting a 21-year jail term after being convicted of raping and sexually abusing the child.

Bedfordshire Police said Khan had been arrested after his victim told teachers what had happened.

Det Con Sophie Andrews said after Khan was sentenced at Luton Crown Court: "I would like to praise the victim for their bravery in coming forward and helping us bring another sexual predator to justice."

Khan had entered not guilty pleas but was found guilty after a trial earlier this year.

Luton Crown Court staff said he had been convicted of offences including rape and sexual assault, and jailed by a judge on 27 June.

The child cannot be identified in media reports for legal reasons.

'Sends a message'

Det Con Andrews added: "Sexual abuse is one of the most devastating experiences a child can endure.

"It not only shatters their sense of safety and innocence during their formative years, but its impact can echo throughout their entire life, affecting their emotional wellbeing, relationships, and sense of self well into adulthood.

"We work hard to tackle all forms of abuse against children and would urge anyone who has concerns that a child is being sexually abused, or has been a victim themselves, no matter how long ago, to come forward.

"I hope this case sends a message that it is never too late to report to us and we will do all we can to support the victim and bring the perpetrator to justice."
