Motorists are being warned to plan ahead for "important improvement works" set to take place on a motorway.

National Highways has released information about a closure on the M3 near Basingstoke in Hampshire, between junction 6 for Black Dam and junction 7 for Dummer interchanges.

Engineers will be working on an electrical upgrade to the section of motorway, which means it will be closed from 21:00 BST until 06:00 on Monday 7 April.

Project manager Edgar Vila Pouca said a diversion would be in place and thanked motorists "for their patience".

He added: "I would urge anyone planning on travelling to allow extra time to complete their journey.

"A signed diversion route will be in place, but it is likely to be busy, especially with nice weather forecast for the weekend and for many the start of the Easter school break."

Mr Vila Pouca explained the work involved tech being installed for a sign on the southbound carriageway between Black Dam and Dummer, which will inform road users about congestion, incidents or planned closures ahead.

The diversion route will be through the M3 junction 6 Spur Road, A30 Ringway South and A30 Winchester Road.
