Awards showcase 'impact' of civil engineering

Flood defences, tidal gates and a highway upgrade project are among projects in Devon and Cornwall shortlisted for a regional civil engineering award.

There are 12 projects in the running for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards 2025, with the public invited to vote for their favourite in the People's Choice Award.

ICE said the shortlist showcased the "breadth and impact" of civil engineering projects across the region.

Miranda Housden, ICE South West regional director, said the awards were a "brilliant opportunity" to recognise civil engineering projects that "shape and strengthen" communities.

She added: "These schemes often go unseen, yet they have a profound impact on our daily lives. Civil engineering is at the heart of building a safer, more connected, and more sustainable future.

"I encourage you to explore this year's inspiring shortlist and vote for the project you feel has made the biggest difference to your local area or the wider region."

Winners of all award categories will be announced at a gala ceremony on 23 October 2025 at Delta Hotels in Bristol.

The 2025 shortlist in Devon and Cornwall:

  • Dawilish to Holcombe Cliff Stabilisation, Devon
  • Lopwell Eel Screening, Devon
  • Sweet Violets Bridge and Link Road, Devon
  • Truro Tidal Gates, Cornwall

Other projects shortlisted:

  • A303 Sparkford to Ilchester Dualling scheme, Somerset
  • Arle Court Transport Hub, Gloucestershire
  • Ashley Down Railway Station, Bristol
  • Bristol Temple Meads, Eastern Entrance
  • Gooseum Rhyne Reservoir, North Somerset
  • Hengistbury Head Long Groyne Upgrade, Dorset
  • Lyneham Banks, Wiltshire

Awards bosses said the public can vote online for the People's Choice Award until 5pm on 29 August 2025 via the ICE South West website.

Voting is free but limited to one vote per person.
