A woman has been safely evacuated from a house fire in Coventry, firefighters say.

Four crews were called to an end-of-terrace property on Cheveral Avenue at about 07:00 BST, with residents from four neighbouring homes also evacuated.

West Midlands Fire Service station commander Robert Norman said the cause of the blaze, which spread to the property's roof, was not yet known but that it had since been extinguished.

Mr Norman added the woman had been in the property when the fire started.

Cheveral Avenue remained closed in both directions, a spokesperson for the service said, with residents advised to avoid the area.

They added the ambulance service had been called to treat a woman for what was believed to have been a minor burn to her wrist.

Ali, who lives opposite the house that caught fire, said the community had pulled together.

"I have recently moved here and I thought it was very touching, everybody was standing with the people who were affected," he said.

"It is really sad that it happened, but the community were holding each other tight and that was really nice."
