An elderly woman has died in a house fire in West Sussex.

Emergency services were called to the fire at a house in Sea Lane, Goring-by-Sea, Worthing, just before 04:00 BST on Thursday.

Sussex Police confirmed the sole occupant of the house, a woman in her 90s, died at the scene.

The force said the woman's next of kin and the coroner have been informed.

Police said they are working with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to establish what caused the fire, though they do not believe it was suspicious.

The fire service said they sent three fire engines to the scene.

It said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two high-pressure hose reels, one covering jet and a safety jet to bring the fire under control.

"Residents living nearby were urged to keep their doors and windows closed due to the amount of smoke.

"We also advised avoiding the area to allow crews to work safely."

Fire crews left the scene by 07:40.
