Dog mess fines order could be extended in borough

A council in Leicestershire plans to extend a legal order which allows people to be fined for not cleaning up their dog's mess.
Fixed penalties of £100 can be issued to anyone who breaks Melton Borough Council's "Promoting Responsible Dog Ownership" Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).
The council launched a consultation on Wednesday seeking residents' views as part of a proposal to extend the order by three years when it expires at the end of 2025.
It said the fines were a deterrent which helped to keep public spaces like parks and streets clean.
Sarah Cox, chair of the Safer Melton Partnership, said: "This order helps us to reinforce responsible dog ownership in the borough, keeping children's play areas and open spaces safe and ensuring our environment and streets are clean.
"Currently, residents are able to report instances of dog-related anti-social behaviour on our website.
"Having these orders in place allows us to investigate and act on the information shared."
The order also currently allows council wardens to fine people with dogs if they do not carry plastic bags or another tool to remove faeces, and to enforce a ban on dogs in play areas.
The consultation runs until 23 July.
