Lifeguard patrols resume at some beaches in Jersey this bank holiday

Thousands of primary schoolchildren in Jersey have been visited by RNLI lifeguards ahead of their return to Le Braye beach this bank holiday weekend.

The Meet the Lifeguards programme has toured 25 schools and given sea safety advice to nearly 3,000 pupils.

Tips have included how to float to live, how to spot and escape rip currents and what to do in an emergency.

RNLI daily patrols resume on Saturday at Le Braye, with the service extending to other beaches later in May.

Tim Treloar, water safety education manager for the South West, said: "Our lifeguards have really enjoyed returning to schools this year.

"We aim to increase children's awareness of the potential dangers that exist around the coast, such as being aware of the weather conditions and changing tides, along with the ability to identify beach flags."

The RNLI said it urged people to choose a lifeguarded beach where possible, and reminded beachgoers to call 999 and ask for the coastguard in any coastal emergency.
