Proposal for chief minister to be elected by voters

A proposition for the chief minister to be elected through an island-wide vote has been lodged au Greffe.

The proposal was lodged on 17 April by Deputy Kristina Moore and would be debated on 13 May at the earliest.

A report accompanying the proposal stated that the change could "boost public engagement" in the elections and offer a "greater level of transparency" regarding the future leadership of the island.

Currently, Jersey's chief minister was not directly elected by the people but by the States Assembly.

A similar proposition was put forward by Deputy Russell Labey in 2017.

He called for a poll to be held after the general election, which would have required the public to turn out to vote again.
