Large fire breaks out at recycling centre

Firefighters are tackling a large blaze at a recycling centre in Swadlincote.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to a business in Willshee Way at 12:51 BST on Sunday.

Eight fire engines, a water carrier, and a command unit were deployed.

Large plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles around, and people in the area have been urged to keep their doors and windows closed.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Fire crews are working hard to contain the fire and are expected to be on scene into the evening."

Fire crews have been using an aerial ladder platform to hose water into the centre of a burning pile of waste.

The fire service said it was working with owners of the site who were using equipment to turn over smouldering material so it could be more easily be extinguished.

The fire service said four crews remained at the site at 18:40.

The Environment Agency said on X it was supporting the fire service at the scene.

Derbyshire Police officers are also at the scene.

Fire crews from Staffordshire have also been called to assist with the blaze.
