A woman has died following a crash between the car she was driving and a lorry.

The blue Vauxhall Mokka and a white goods vehicle crashed at about 11:30 GMT on Monday on the A19 northbound, near to the Nissan factory in Sunderland.

The driver of the Mokka, a woman in her 70s, was found to have sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later by paramedics.

A woman in her 40s who was a passenger in the car was taken to hospital for treatment but her injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Northumbria Police said.

The lorry driver remained at the scene to assist police and a section of the A19 was closed in both directions between the A1231 and A1290 junctions to allow officers to carry out investigative work.

The road is now fully reopened and police have asked witnesses to contact them.
