Man charged with attempting to murder his wife

A man has been remanded in custody at Londonderry Magistrates' Court charged with the attempted murder of his wife on Friday.
Raghib Ali Rizvi Syed, 57, of The Hillocks in the Altnagelvin area of the Waterside, was also charged with threatening to kill her and his two sons on the same date, and wounding one of his sons with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
He was also accused of arson again on Friday and assaulting the woman last Thursday.
The defendant was remanded in custody to appear again on 10 July.
A police officer said he could connect the accused to the charges.
A defence lawyer said there would be no application for bail at this stage as the defendant had no address apart from the one he shared with the alleged victim.
He told the court that Mr Syed had been taken to hospital on Friday after what he called "a psychotic episode" but refused treatment.
The solicitor said the woman had phoned Altnagelvin Hospital, where she works as a doctor, and paramedics attended, during which the alleged offences happened.
The defence lawyer said his client was aware he would be remanded in custody and requested the court order a psychiatric assessment.
The police officer told the court the defendant had been deemed fit for interview following his arrest.
