Guernsey's fire service urged islanders to check their smoke alarms were working

The fire service has reminded islanders to check their smoke alarms after a fire broke out in St Peter Port.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to a fire at a property on La Charroterie on Sunday.

Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service said a candle had caused the fire and residents had been alerted by smoke alarms so had left the building before firefighters arrived.

Guernsey Police said it had closed the road during the incident and opened it about an hour later.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We would like to remind everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms and testing them regularly."
