The toll charge to cross over Southampton's Itchen Bridge is going up.

People from outside the city and residents without a SmartCities card will pay 20p more to cross per journey - a one-way trip over the bridge in a car or light van will cost £1.20.

Residents using the prepaid card travelling across in cars and light vans will continue to pay 40p per crossing.

The toll increase on the bridge, which links Woolston to Southampton city centre, comes into effect from Monday.

Southampton City Council said the increase had been brought in following a consultation in February.

The authority said the rise would "help to ease congestion in the city by encouraging vehicles to take other routes better designed for high levels of traffic".

It said it would also raise additional money to pay for improvements and maintenance on the bridge.

The toll last went up in January 2024.

The bridge, which links Woolston to Southampton city centre, opened on 1 June 1977.
