Staff are set to receive a £100 bonus for every year they have worked at a travel agency.

Sunderland-based Hays Travel said it would hand out the money as it revealed record sales figures, having hit the £3bn mark one month before the end of the financial year.

The firm's head Dame Irene Hays said: "Our success is down to our people."

Company official Lenore Mason, who has worked at the firm for 37 years, said she felt happy to work at a company that "continued to grow in the region where I grew up".

Dame Irene said the £3bn "milestone" was an opportunity to demonstrate to staff "just how much their excellent work and unwavering loyalty are appreciated".

Last year the company, which is the UK's largest travel agency, recorded £2.55bn worth of sales.

In August 2020 the firm said up to 878 employees were at risk of losing their jobs due to pandemic travel restrictions.

The previous year prior the company made headlines when it took on more than 2,000 former Thomas Cook staff.
