A young girl has died in a road crash in County Donegal.

It happened on the R240 at Carrowmore, Glentogher, Carndonagh, shortly before 18:30 local time on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the Gardaí (Irish police) said the emergency services were alerted to a collision involving a car and a van.

Three other people in the car – including a man in his 30s and woman, aged in her 20s and who was the driver of the car, and another girl - were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry where they all remain in a serious condition.

No other injuries have been reported.

A spokesperson for the Gardaí said: "The road is currently closed for a technical examination by forensic collision investigators and local diversions in place. The road will remain closed overnight."

The road remains closed on Thursday morning.

Donegal Sinn Féin TD (MP) Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said news of the crash was "heartbreaking".

He said his "thoughts and prayers" are with the family of the young girl and with those who are seriously injured.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage to come forward.
