Bridge repairs to begin after delay

Work to restore a 131-year-old bridge is due to begin following delays to the project.
Built in 1894, the full refurbishment of the Causeway Bridge in Wolsingham was due to start last year but was delayed due to backlash from residents.
The bridge across the River Wear will be temporarily closed to cars for three weeks from Tuesday, but remain open to pedestrians.
The remainder of the project will be completed using temporary traffic lights, with a width limit of 3.25m and diversion routes in place.
Durham County Council said the restoration is expected to be complete in early 2026.
