Volunteers clean vandalised cafe for Mother's Day

Volunteers helped a cafe to open for Mother's Day after six of its front windows were smashed the night before, its owner has said.

Vandals attacked Isla Bay on Hayling Island, Hampshire, but did not steal anything.

Co-owner Eray Karaca said he was grateful to people who arrived within hours with brushes to clear up the debris.

An online appeal to show community support for the cafe has so far raised more than £3,000.

Mr Karaca said his business, which opened in September 2023, was the only one attacked that night in a row of shops in Rails Lane.

He said: "It's very sad because it seems like they were targeting us.

"Now we are closed three or four days. We spent money, the staff need to earn - it affects [people in] many ways.

"We are really glad the community has supported us."

On Facebook, more than 300 people expressed their sympathy.

One well-wisher posted: "Hopefully you will be able to sleep well tonight in the knowledge you have a strong community behind you."

Police said: "We were called at 06:33 BST to a report that a number of windows had been smashed at Isla Bay restaurant on Rails Lane.

"Nothing has been reported stolen and no-one has been injured."
