Town to get £54k for cycling improvements

A town is to receive £54,000 in funding to improve its cycling infrastructure.
Members of Furness Locality Board approved sheltered parking at two areas in Barrow and for a study to allow opportunities for other small-scale improvements.
Council documents said there were "gaps" in current bike parking provision at key public destinations, including Barrow Town Hall and Barrow Park Leisure Centre.
The report added the project would "add value to the work of the community development and active travel teams of supporting active travel" locally.
According to the report, read at a meeting at Barrow Town Hall, the type of interventions could also include the removal of barriers, improve signage, install new crossing points, upgrade side roads and create new refuges.
The project will produce an unfunded programme of small schemes that will be looked at by councillors and council officers.
Meanwhile, the active travel study aims to allow opportunities for improvements to be more readily delivered using local funds.
The bike shelters could be in place by November, the Local Democracy Reporting Service understands.
Council documents read: "The projects described above will support the wider delivery of the Barrow-in Furness cycling infrastructure network and small-scale improvements for cycling in [the town].
"It will help ensure that key trip destinations, e.g. leisure centre and town centre, have good quality sheltered cycle parking in the desired areas."
