A train line has been shut due to a large fire at an industrial unit.

Five appliances are tackling the blaze in Birtley, Gateshead, which broke out just before 15:00 BST.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said it had closed lines between Durham and Newcastle and that trains were cancelled or subject to delays until at least 18:00.

Large plumes of smoke can be seen at the site and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is urging nearby residents to keep windows and doors shut.

A spokesperson said crews arrived at the scene within six minutes of being called out.

"Crews have been deployed from Birtley, Swalwell, Washington, Gateshead and Marley Park Community Fire Stations and we expect to be on scene for several hours," the spokesperson said.

"We are currently working with colleagues at Northumbria Police during this incident.

"Please be mindful of traffic congestion in the area whilst the incident is ongoing and if you live in the area affected by the smoke, keep windows and doors closed."
