All flats in Peterborough are to have separate food waste collections

All flats in Peterborough are set to have food waste collections by March 2026, it has been confirmed.

Peterborough City Council launched a scheme in September which will see all flats supplied with an indoor food caddy and a roll of liners.

The scheme was brought in to comply with the latest government regulations which state all local authorities must collect food waste separately from residential properties.

As of March 2025, Peterborough City Council had rolled out the service to 1,200 flats, working towards a target of 15,000 over the next 12 months.

A spokesperson for the authority said collections would be scheduled weekly: "The service will include providing each building with a communal food waste bin and each flat with an indoor food caddy and a roll of liners."

The council asked people who have not yet received the service to continue to put their food waste into general waste communal bins.

It said recycling food waste by putting it in the grey food bin was better for the environment and saved the council about £870,000 a year in disposal costs.

Collected food waste is sent to an anaerobic digestion facility in Hertfordshire to be turned into fertiliser for agriculture, and biogas which is used to generate renewable electricity for homes.
