Cambridgeshire Police said the two men fled from officers in Eagle Street

A suspected drug dealer assaulted a police officer with a knife, officers have said.

Police said two men believed to be involved in drug dealing ran away from officers who were on patrol in Eagle Street in Cambridge just before 15:00 GMT on Wednesday.

One of the officers said he was assaulted with a knife when he caught up with the pair.

A 26-year-old man from the city was subsequently charged with various offences and Det Ch Insp Tom Rowe, from Cambridgeshire Police, said his colleague was "incredibly brave".

"Both officers acted with great bravery," he continued.

"Their quick-thinking, skilled work, undoubtedly contributed to ensuring both the stable condition of the officer and prevention of any further risk to the public."

The injured officer has been discharged from Addenbrooke's Hospital and is recovering well, police say.

The suspect was charged with wounding without intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of a knife in a public place, possession with intent to supply cannabis and possession of criminal property.

He was due to appear at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on Friday, the force said.
