Trial aims to silence tinnitus before it takes hold
For what scientists believe is the first time, a trial looking at treating tinnitus is targeting people who have only just developed the condition.
Researchers at Newcastle University will be using electrical stimulation of the brain along with sound therapy on participants who can hear a persistent ringing or buzzing.
Similar treatments have been tried before, but only once a patient has been struggling with the problem for at least six months, and usually years.
The work, which is being funded by the American Tinnitus Association, aims to find a way of stopping the condition so early it does not develop into a chronic problem.
