Dickie Bird: 'The war was very frightening - but VE Day was magnificent'

Yorkshire icon Dickie Bird OBE has been interviewed by a young history enthusiast about his memories of World War Two.

Eleven-year-old Niall, who is from north Leeds, acted as a BBC reporter for the day and met the retired cricket umpire, 92, at his home in Barnsley ahead of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Despite an 81-year age gap, the pair got along well and Mr Bird even said it was "one of the best interviews" he had ever done.

Mr Bird, who was 12 years old on VE Day, said it was a "magnificent day" and the celebrations were "out of this world". The famous Yorkshireman also described what it was like living through the "very frightening" air raids and rationing of the war years.
