'We'll try to keep The Dark Hedges around as long as we can'
A new heritage group is hoping to preserve some of the remaining beech trees which make up The Dark Hedges near Armoy in County Antrim.
The tunnel of trees shot to fame after featuring on TV drama Game of Thrones, and has attracted tourists from around the world.
But increased tourist activity in the area, and the trees coming to the end of their natural lifespan, has taken its toll, with 13 lost since November 2023.
Graham Thompson, chief of Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust which is taking over management of the trees, said common beech trees live for around 250 years.
"The ones at the Dark Hedges are almost 250 years old, so they are sadly dying.
"But what we want to do now is for the future, see how long we can preserve the longevity of those trees and maintain the experience for people visiting here."
