The 'monster' that terrified Georgian London
A century before Jack the Ripper, another now long-forgotten fiend haunted the streets of London. He became known as the London Monster and his modus operandi was to stalk well-to-do Georgian ladies and attack their thighs or buttocks with a sharp rapier.
Hysteria gripped the city; sightings of a bang-haired, long-limbed ‘Monster’ were reported on many a dimly-lit street corner. With the police seemingly outsmarted at every turn, it created one of the earliest examples of what would later become known as a ‘moral panic’.
