A former bus depot in the centre of a village will be turned into 14 homes and a corner shop after councillors granted planning approval.

The Chambers bus garage was based in Bures Saint Mary, near Sudbury, Suffolk, for generations but closed down several years ago.

Babergh District Council heard the "sensitive" redevelopment, which lies in a conservation area, would include retaining the large shutter doors and repurposing the red-brick company office as a convenience store.

Sam Brown, of agent Rose Builders, told the planning committee that work was expected to begin on the "tired and unloved" site in mid to late summer.

The plan includes knocking down outbuildings, and the "substantial" demolition of the bus depot, all of which are in a poor state of repair, according to a planning officer's report.

A similar plan by the same applicant, Rosper Estates, was approved in 2022 but did not proceed after a national retailer backed out, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
