A new skatepark designed with help from the community has officially opened on a town's promenade.

The facility in Maryport, Cumbria, is part of a multimillion-pound project to regenerate the town, with a cafe being built next to it.

Residents have been calling for the facility for some time and the project was drawn up from a wish list put together by the town's Skatepark for Maryport panel.

Ethan Risman-Leach, of the group, said he hoped the facility would encourage "people of all ages and abilities to keep active" and take up a new hobby.

It includes ramps, ledges, boxes and rails and is designed to enable people to skate together, regardless of their level of expertise, Cumberland Council said.

The authority managed the project, paid for from a £12m government regeneration fund.

Council leader Mark Fryer said: "I am really looking forward to seeing the prom becoming even more of a destination next year when we open the new cafe, the new Maritime Museum and the new outdoor event space on the harbourside."
