The M6 in Staffordshire has reopened after it was closed due to a fatal crash in which a car hit a lorry driver who had left his cab.

West Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the southbound carriageway between junction 16 for Crewe and junction 15 near Newcastle-under-Lyme shortly before 22:00 GMT on Thursday.

A spokesperson said the male driver of the HGV was found in a critical condition and died at the scene.

Staffordshire Police said he was out of the vehicle at the time of the crash as it had broken down.

His family is being supported by specialist officers, according to the force.

The male driver of the car, a Toyota Avensis, was treated at the scene for leg and facial injuries before being taken to hospital.

Police said his injuries were not believed to be life changing or life threatening.

National Highways said the incident was cleared and all lanes were reopened at about 15:00 GMT on Friday.
