A water company is working to fix a sewer leak at a Northamptonshire beauty spot.

Anglian Water said it had sent tankers to Skew Bridge Lake Walk, a circular walking route around a nature reserve next to Rushden Lakes Shopping Centre, on Monday.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed it was the second time sewage had been pumped from the site in six months, and added that a queue of waste tankers had assembled on the nearby Crown Way Industrial Estate to address the issue.

In a statement, Anglian Water said the tankers were "on site to take away wastewater to our nearby treatment works" at Great Billing, but did not indicate how long the work would take.

"We know tankers are large and noisy, and we're sorry for any disruption they're causing while they're in use," it read.

"They'll continue pumping wastewater out of the network to protect homes and the environment until we've been able to get everything back to normal.

"This will be a complex repair, so our teams are working on detailed plans to make sure we protect the environment and keep our people safe as we carry it out.

"We'd like to thank the local residents for bearing with us while we carry out this emergency work."

The firm said it would issue updates about the repairs on its website.

The Northamptonshire Telegraph reported that Skew Bridge Lake Walk has been closed until further notice.

Rushden Lakes Shopping Centre has been approached for comment.
