Coastguard crews rescued three people and two dogs from a ledge in Gwithian

A group of dog walkers had to rescued during the early hours of New Year's Day along the Cornish coast.

The HM Coastguard Portreath Rescue Team said on Facebook it was called out at about 04:15 GMT after three people and two dogs were cut off by the incoming tide in Gwithian.

The post said a coastguard rescue team from St Ives, the St Ives RNLI crew, a coastguard helicopter and the coastguard duty officer all attended the incident.

The coastguard said the group were found on a ledge at the high water mark and were able to be rescued before waves started covering the area.

The post added: "There was a positive outcome to this incident but this could have been very different.

"We couldn't stress enough the need to check tide times and weather condition before walking around the coast."
