Customers and staff have been evacuated from a leisure centre after a "loud explosion", was heard at about 09:50 GMT.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said no one was injured in the incident involving a biomass boiler in Acomb, York.

A spokesperson for Better, which runs the Energise Leisure Centre off Gale Lane, said about 150 people were evacuated safely and the building reopened at 13:30 when the fire service said it was safe.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said.

A statement added: "The damage caused is confined to the biomass storage silo, which was external to the premises, and there is no more risk at the scene.

"The affected equipment has been safely electrically isolated."

The leisure centre has since fully re-opened.
