National Highways said the improvements were to aid safety

A major road will receive a new speed restriction and more cameras in an attempt to improve safety.

Seven new 'average speed' cameras will be installed on a five-mile section of the A5 between Thorn Roundabout, near Dunstable, in Bedfordshire, and Little Brickhill, in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

The speed limit will also be reduced from 60mph to 50mph. National Highways classed the A road as high-risk and identified safety improvements that could be made.

Work on the £2.1m project started on Monday and was expected to be completed by summer 2025.

Niamh McGrath, National Highways project manager, said: "These changes to the speed limit will reduce the frequency and severity of collisions which helps keep traffic flowing and creates safer roads for everyone."

Drivers have been warned to expects overnight closures on the A5 between Kelly's Kitchen Roundabout, south of Bletchley, and Thorn Roundabout while work takes place.

National Highways said some work could be carried out on weekends and added that laybys between Little Brickhill and Thorn Roundabout will be closed for the full duration.
