A nine-year-old girl and a man in his 80s have been injured in a car crash which police said was caused by two off-road vehicles.
The crash took place at 18:30 GMT on Sunday on Toll Bar Road, in Ryhope, when a quad bike and a motorbike joined the road from a grassed verge.
They caused a Peugeot 308 and a Vauxhall Combo, which were travelling in opposite directions, to collide, Northumbria Police said.
Both bikes made off from the area and officers are now appealing for witnesses.
Both the girl, who was a passenger in the Peugeot, and the man, a passenger in the Vauxhall, were taken to hospital.
A force spokesman said their injuries were "not believed to be serious".
