A man has died after getting out of his car following a crash on the A1 and being struck by a lorry.

Police said a VW Golf travelling south hit the central reservation near the A1068 sliproad to Alnwick, Northumberland, on Monday at about 18:40 GMT.

The driver, a man in his 30s, left the car and began crossing the northbound carriageway where he was struck.

He died a short time later, Northumbria Police said, despite the efforts of emergency services.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The lorry driver remained at the scene to help with the investigation.

Sgt Steven Chappell described it as a "tragic incident" and said the force was working to determine what happened.
