A man has been jailed for 16 weeks for breaking into a primary school during the half-term break.

Police were called to Whitehall Primary School in St George, Bristol, at about 15:20 GMT on Tuesday after a member of the public spotted a man climbing the perimeter fence.

On arrival, officers found that a shed on the premises had been broken into and items taken.

Connor Joe Godfrey, 27, of Eastville, was arrested as he climbed back over the fence.

Godfrey was jailed for 16 weeks at Bristol Magistrates Court on Thursday after admitting burglary and further charges of possession of heroin and crack cocaine.

A charge of going equipped to steal was dropped.

Chief Insp Vicks Hayward-Melen, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "This just goes to show the important part our communities can play in helping us to keep our neighbourhoods safe.

"We always want to hear about crime in progress and will respond whenever resources allow."

A second man arrested close to the school shortly after the break-in has been released without charge.
