Police said the collision on Wednesday afternoon involved a car and a lorry

A four-year-old boy and eight-year-old girl are in hospital after a car overturned in a crash on the A9 in the Highlands.

The two children were passengers in a car that collided with a lorry near Carrbridge, south of Inverness, at about 14:20 on Wednesday.

The children were airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The car driver, a 47-year-old man, was taken to the same hospital by ambulance.

Police said all three were in a stable condition. The lorry driver was not injured.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said an air ambulance and coastguard helicopter were sent to the incident, along with two ambulances and a trauma team.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines and a heavy rescue unit.

Traffic Scotland said the A9 was closed between the Slochd and Carrbridge until 23:00.

Police Scotland has appealed for information.

Sgt Kate Finlayson said: "We are aware members of the public stopped to help before emergency services attended.

"I'd like to thank them and ask any who have not already spoken to police to make contact with us.

"I'm also appealing to anyone else who saw what happened or has dashcam footage from the A9 in the Carrbridge area around the time of the collision, to please come forward as it may assist our inquiries."

In a separate incident in the Highlands, one person was taken to hospital following a crash on the A82 at Glencoe.

The incident happened at about 12:15. The road has since reopened.
