St Cuthbert's Garden Village is the largest project of its kind in the north of England

People have been asked to have their say on the latest plans for a new village which could contain 10,000 new homes.

Construction of St Cuthbert's Garden Village, near Carlisle, will span the next 30 to 40 years and will include houses, commercial properties, five primary schools and a secondary school.

A draft Local Plan for the project was approved by Cumberland Council earlier this month and is now going before the public.

Councillor Bob Kelly said the authority had worked with local communities on the development, but now was the "final opportunity" to comment on scheme.

"The consultation is an opportunity for anyone with an interest to tell us whether or not we have got it right before it goes on to government later in the year to be assessed by an independent planning inspector," he said.

Those who take part will be able to share their views on the draft policies and view the map of the village.

Three public consultation events will be held this week to provide more information.

The first will take place on Tuesday at Cummersdale Village Hall, the second on Wednesday at Carlisle Racecourse and the third on Thursday at Creighton Rugby Club.

The consultation period ends on 6 May.
