A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was attacked in an alleyway.

The woman was followed by a man and raped in Newlands Place, Banbury, Oxfordshire. It took place between 03:25 and 3:50 GMT on Saturday.

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses. It said the woman, in her late teens, sustained minor injuries and went to hospital but has since been discharged.

A 26-year-old man from Kettering, Northamptonshire, remains in police custody.

Police said before the attack the offender approached three women on Broad Street and tried to hug them.

Investigating officer Det Insp James Holden-White said: "I understand that this may cause concern but I want to reassure the community that this was an isolated incident.

"An arrest has been made but I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the moments leading up to this incident or has any information that can assist our investigation.

"I am also appealing to the group of women who were approached by the offender on the same night as they may have vital information."
